International Animation Day is celebrated annually on October 28. This holiday is dedicated to the art of animation and to everyone involved in creating cartoons, animated films, computer graphics, and visual effects.

Historical origin
The holiday was established in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) with the support of UNESCO. The date was chosen to honor the first public screening of an animated film, which took place on October 28, 1892, in Paris. At that time, French inventor and artist Émile Reynaud presented his “Optical Theatre” — a device that allowed moving images to be displayed using drawings on a strip. This event is considered the birth of animation as an art form.

Significance of the holiday
International Animation Day celebrates the contribution of animation to world culture and the development of cinematic art. Animation combines technology, creativity, and imagination, helping to tell stories, inspire audiences, and explore new forms of self-expression.
